r madhavan

Actor R Madhavan has built a reputation for portraying grounded and relatable characters, and his latest project, Hisaab Barabar, continues this trend. This Zee5 original film features Madhavan as a railway ticket checker, reflecting his commitment to authentic storytelling.

R Madhavan on his approach to choosing roles

In a recent conversation with HT, R Madhavan shared insights into his approach to choosing roles. He expressed that his focus on relatable characters is key to staying relevant in the industry. Over the last decade, he has made minimal appearances in Hindi films, with Hisaab Barabar being only his fourth Bollywood film since Tanu Weds Manu Returns—released a decade ago. He remarked, “I use this time to explore and observe people.”

Madhavan believes in observation

Madhavan believes that his observations of society have played a significant role in his enduring relevance. He stated, “The reason I have been able to manage to be relevant after 25 years without having the cliched superhero qualities… is because I can portray the most difficult generation in the history of the world correctly.”

He elaborated on the unique challenges faced by his generation, noting, “Indians of my generation from around the world are products of middle-class upbringing… We have had to fight to stay relevant.” Madhavan emphasized that his niche lies in representing the empowered common man, stating, “The common man is no longer ‘bechaara,’ and I have been observing how to play that.”

Maddy on challenges

Being selective about film roles comes with its own challenges. When asked if he fears becoming out of sight, out of mind, he confidently responded, “I have learnt how to maintain relevance… If you have carved a niche for yourself, you survive.”
